England's BBC Radio 2 presented its annual folk music awards less than two weeks ago, and since many of the winners have recently had albums released on these shores, there was a show in the making. A few surprises for the show including two selections from a vinyl album Ralph McTell recorded for a children's show he co-hosted for British TV. The pieces hold up remarkably well.
The awards were Martin Carthy, folksinger of the year; Cherish The Ladies, best group; Cara Dillon, Horizon Award and best traditional track; Martin Simpson, instrumentalist of the year and best album (The Bramble Briar); and Kate Rusby, best original song. Lifetime Achievement Awards went to McTell, the Chieftains and Fairport Convention
