This show focuses entirely on two album sets that provide reissues on CD of classic recordings from Britain's Free Reed music label and from America's Fast Folk Musical Magazine. Both are integral parts of contemporary folk music and its history.
"This Label Is Not Removable," a three-CD set, celebrates 25 years starting in 1976 of Free Reed, a labor of love of Neil Wayne's that recorded some of the most vital and important music of the British Folk Revival as well as major collecting projects of traditional players. This latest set is the sixth in a series of boxed sets produced by Free Reed featuring "masters of the British revival."
Similarly, Fast Folk, guided for nearly a quarter century by songwriter Jack Hardy, provided a platform for singer-songwriters off which were launched successful careers of many of acoustic music's leading voices. The entire Fast Folk collection of 105 albums and accompanying magazines, along with other recordings and archival materials, was recently donated to Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and "Fast Folk," the two-CD album, is the first compilation culled from the collection.
