10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters
A two-part program: The first hour spotlighted the first half of a marvelous tribute album to revered Chicago folk scene bard and fixture Fred Holstein, who died a little more than one-year ago at age 61. The second hour was one of our “first airing” features of selected artists being heard for the first time on Profiles in Folk. When Fred Holstein died last year I programmed an hour of his music and, despite Holstein not being generally well known on the East Coast, the listener response was amazing. So when “Remembering Fred: A Tribute to Fred Holstein” arrived at the station, it was a given to devote parts of at least two shows to it. The album features live music recorded at a memorial concert April 3, 2004 at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and features a wide array of performers and friends of Holstein. Proceeds from the album sale benefit the Fred Holstein Scholarship Fund at Old Town. It is available at www.fredholstein.com Again, the listener response to this program was gratifying. Our “first airing” featured selections from albums by Pacific Northwest fiddler and singer Leah Larson, Nashville singer-songwriter Tom Fisch and songstress Lauren Sheehan of Portland, Oregon.
