A Tribute to Mom

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

Sunday is Mother’s Day and the first 75 minutes of this show comprises our annual tribute to moms the world over, including a reading of Julia Ward Howe’s “Mother’s Day Proclamation, written around 1870. In the aftermath of the horrific American Civil War, Howe envisioned Mother’s Day as a call to pacifism and disarmament by women. In subsequent years, others took up the cause of peace but support also spread for a more general holiday to recognize the contributions made by women and the custom spread across the country. West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1910 and four years later President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
