This was really a folk potpourri of a program, drawing on new releases, some old favorites from Maine balladeer Gordon Bok who is appearing in our broadcast area, and a special one-set observance of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Vernon Dalhart (Marion Try Slaughter), a pioneer American recording star and the first country artist to sell over a million recordings.
A native of Texas, Dalhart’s story is a tragic one. The financial success he gained from his early recordings in the 1920s was wiped out in the Stock Market Crash at the start of The Depression and he eventually retired from show business in the late 1930s to Bridgeport, Connecticut’s largest city. WSHU’s Fairfield studios are on the border with Bridgeport. When he died in 1948 Dalhart was working as the night checkout clerk in Bridgeport’s old Barnum Hotel. He’s buried in Bridgeport.
