A Double Celebration

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

There are plenty of candles on the cakes tonight. This show is a double celebration of the contributions made to old time music by Mike Seeger, who turned 75 on Aug. 15, and the New Lost City Ramblers, a group of which he was a founder 50 years ago. It would take a show five times as long as this one to do justice to feting both Mike Seeger and the New Lost City Rambler. Their influence on traditional folk music and especially American folk music and its practitioners is immense and everlasting.

As the late musicologist Jon Pankake once wrote of the Ramblers, Seeger and his cohorts John Cohen, Tom Paley and then Tracy Schwartz possessed the “… explicit intention of performing American folk music as it sounded before the inroads of radio, movies and television had begun to homogenize our diverse regional folkways.”

This tribute afforded us the opportunity of bringing back the Ramblers’ version of “Colored Aristocracy”, which for at least a decade was the theme song for “Profiles in Folk”.
