In Memoriam: Charlie Louvin

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

The greater part of this show features a tribute to Charlie Louvin, one half of one of the most renowned brother acts in country music who died Jan. 26 at age 83 after a nearly year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. With his older brother Ira, the Louvin Brothers brought the close-harmony singing of early country groups such as the Delmore Brothers and Blue Sky Boys into contemporary country music. But, perhaps even more important, the music and vocal style of the Louvin Brothers influenced several generations of musicians from country to folk to bluegrass to rock. It's an everlasting and ever living legacy and this program presents just a smidgeon of it.

Charlie and Ira parted ways en route to solo careers in 1963. Ira died in an automobile accident two years later but Charlie went on to a successful solo career up to the day he died.

The night began with a bit of "mandolin madness" and also featured selections from the debut album of The Boxcar Lilies from Massachusetts, a trio who will be making three appearances in our broadcast area during the next week.
