The Northeast (and most of the nation) is suffering through a blistering heat wave this week so, what else, we offered up some blisterin’ bluegrass to raise the temperature even more on a Friday night.
On the serious side, there is a memorial tribute to fiddler Kenny Baker, the longest serving Bluegrass Boy who Bill Monroe used to introduce as the “greatest fiddler in bluegrass.” Baker died at age 85 on July 8 in Nashville, Tenn. Baker’s long-bow style of playing, especially during his third and longest tenure with Monroe from 1968 to 1984, changed the character of bluegrass fiddle playing. Influenced by Western swing and jazz as well as the old-timey fiddling of Marion Sumner, Baker offered a sweeter, fuller tone with control and subtle articulation that was new to bluegrass. In turn, he influenced several generations of bluegrass fiddlers.
This show started off with a bridge from our July 15 show of all Celtic music.
