Music From The Midwest & New Releases

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

I recently returned from a vacation on the prairie in America’s Heartland — Urbana/Champaign, Illinois, to be precise — and brought back some fine music. I volunteered at the 3rd Annual Urbana Folk and Roots Festival (to assist my son run one of the festival stages) and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I decided to devote more than half of this program to music from folk performers based in the Midwest, including Matt & Tom Turino, the Mean Lids and Pokey LaFarge who were among the lengthy list of performers at the festival.

Although Mustard’s Retreat — David Tamulevich and Michel Hough — are based in Ann Arbor, Mich., David grew up in nearby Branford, CT and crafted the marvelous song below about the Thimble Islands off the Branford shore in Long Island Sound.

The show opened with selections from new albums by two of my favorite performers, John McCutcheon and Kate Campbell, and concluded with selections from Rhode Island’s Marc Douglas Berardo, a past guest on Profiles, and Milford’s Stephen Bennett, both of whom offer concerts in our broadcast area this weekend.
