For the first show of the New Year I returned to the old year — 2011 — and offer selections from a smattering of performers from varied branches of folk music who died in the past year. Profiles featured a number of musical “in memoriams” during the past calendar year, but it always seems appropriate to offer what Sing Out magazine calls a “Last Chorus” before turning the page on a new year.
Obviously, such a show, especially since I prefer programming multiple selections by an artist on Profiles, can only include a very limited number of performers in two hours. However, also in mind and spirit were these others who departed in 2011: Bert Jansch, Charlie Louvin, Kenny Baker, Deborah Friedman, Doc Williams, Bud Reed, Carlton Haney, Kate Rinzler, Reg Moores, Suze Rotolo, Pinetop Perkins, Matt Jones, Phoebe Snow, Michael Meldrum, Spencer Moore, Liz Meyer, Honeyboy Edwards, Wilma Lee Cooper, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, David Rea, Tom Keith, Hubert Sumlin and some I’m sure I have missed.
