Old Time Flights of Fancy / In Memoriam: Levon Helm

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

This program’s main focus falls squarely on old-time music and its offshoots, with tunes ranging from the late 1890s to the modern day. The Old 78s and Todalo Shakers are new to Profiles in Folk listeners and highly recommended for their wonderful and skillful restoration of some very old music.

We devoted a portion of the second hour in tribute to Levon Helm, who died at age 71 on April 19 of throat cancer. Helm’s musical endeavors with The Band certainly fit more easily into the rock portfolio. However, during the past eight years, as his musical and personal financial situations resurrected, he also found a home (and an adoring audience) in folk and acoustic music. The man from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas was the heart and soul of The Band before its untimely and sordid demise, but he enjoyed a renewed and joyful career these last eight years, including winning two Grammys and successfully returning to the concert circuit.
