Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson died this past Tuesday at age 89. Recipient of the National Medal of Arts, a National Heritage Fellowship and eight Grammy Awards (including one for Lifetime Achievement), Doc Watson blended traditional Appalachian old-time music with bluegrass, country and blues to create a unique guitar style that influenced generations of folk and rock guitarists.
I was departing for vacation when the news of Doc’s death came, so this program is an updated rebroadcast of a Profiles in Folk show which originally aired on July 19, 2002 and is entirely appropriate as a tribute to one of American folk music's true treasures. Many thanks to WSHU Chief Engineer Paul Litwinovich for his editing help in placing new introductory and closing remarks on the program. The program is culled from a marvelous three-CD set entitled "Legacy" issued by High Windy Audio, which remains in print. The three-CD set is comprised of recordings of interviews with Doc and a live concert recording. The album set is a past Grammy Award winner for traditional folk music. The High Windy package is an outgrowth of a remarkable musical collaboration and deep friendship that developed over two decades between Doc and noted musician and storyteller David Holt. The concept for this three-CD set progressed from a television concert they were asked to do in 1998 for North Carolina Public Television, which garnered great viewer response. Doc and David then took their discussion and music show, called "The Hills Of Home Tour," on the road to audiences intrigued about learning more about Doc's singular and inspiring life. Because of the lengthy list of snippets of interview and songs, we'll dispense with a playlist for this show.
