Leonard Cohen: Old Ideas, New Friends … And A Few Old Acquaintances

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

This week’s it’s a “show within a show” as I offer up Joyride Media’s wonderful one hour production of “Leonard Cohen: Old Ideas With New Friends” based on the legendary singer-songwriter’s new album, “Old Ideas” (Columbia), his first studio album since 2004. The Joyride Media show features vintage Cohen waxing philosophical at two recent press conferences devoted to the CD as well as observations from a host of young artists that the 77-year-old legend has influenced.

For the show’s start, I selected recordings from Cohen songwriting contemporaries in the 1960s folk scene in which his music and poetry first emerged. The show ended with two Cohen songs performed by Judy Collins who was instrumental in introducing Cohen’s songs (and Cohen) to American audiences.
