Folk Festival Time

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

Hey, summer’s here and it’s the start of an intensive folk festival time. Although festivals take place year round, it’s the hot weather months when they sprout up like crabgrass in July. In this show we offer a nutshell history of festivals in the U.S. and examine these unique gatherings of community that bring folkies together for a common purpose. Folk music festivals (and their antecedents, the fiddle competitions and gatherings of yore) have been with us in America for well over a century. However, it was the folk revival of the late 1950s and 1960s that provided the spark to move such festivals into the American musical mainstream.
