Songs of The Sea, The Lakes — and Pork Chops

10 p.m. to Midnight Host: Steve Winters

Around these environs, summer offers prime weather for spending time out on the water. Long Island Sound is not quite the Atlantic Ocean that some of our Long Island listeners enjoy, but it is our own “inland sea.” I extended the sea music to the Great Lakes and dipped into older recordings by Great Lakes expert Lee Murdock of Illinois and Fresh Water Trade from Canada. At show’s end, I featured songs about fishing.

Of course, amidst all this sea and lake music was a short foray into the disparate theme (hey, variety is what folk music is all about) of pork chops, which seem to be showing up prominently in folk and acoustic music recordings in recent months. Witness our four-song showcase of “the other white meat.” We accompanied the music with a short historical commentary on pork chops and blues.
