It will be five years on May 23 that Bruce “Utah” Phillips, the “Golden Voice of the Great Southwest,” died at age 73.
As I noted at that time, Bruce Phillips wore so many labels: itinerant folksinger, extraordinary storyteller, social activist, labor historian, union organizer, railroad tramp, hobo, peace activist, anarchist and iconoclast, Wobbly. He was a first class human being and a man of the people. Despite his “aw, shucks” and at-times disheveled appearance and demeanor, he was a polished and consummate performer who enjoyed a 38-year career and who exerted a strong influence on the folk community and folk music.
I packaged some contra dance and string band music around the showcase of Bruce Phillips' songs.
